The idea came about during a semester of staring at the Periodic Table of Elements trying to get the numbers and letters to sink into my brain for the final exams. You all know the original primary four Elements… Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, well just as those elements needed updating so did Hip Hop’s primary four.

Just like the Periodic Table of Elements, this table is based on the basic elements at the top, and later 'elements' in succession. And just like the Periodic Table of the Elements, it's organized by rows and vertical columns as you'll see examining it. Also like the Elements table, some of the abbreviations don't appear to be shorted versions for the name of elements themselves. For example the element Gold is "Au" (because it is Latin for aurum), likewise the element Block Party "He" is short for Herc.

So basically what started out as a trick for memorizing Chemistry 101 turned into countless wasted employer hours of non-work related distractions for me and Uptownkid. What you see before you took literally months and months of us scrutinizing the validity of each element so to help us, we came up with the following basic rules…

- Elements are things not people (that's why there is no Herc element)

- Elements (at some point in time) must have been associated with the Hip Hop culture (obviously)

- Elements must be agreed upon by a majority of heads as genuinely Hip Hop. (For example we thought about "Sprite" because of the Hip Hop commercials years ago being in the Name Brand column, but decided it was basically a mere side note compared to brand names that did make it)

- Elements should be arranged in chronological order (if possible) by row and in categories by columns (again if possible). This was difficult, but our current configuration is about as close as we can come to following that general rule.

This is version 1.1 of the table, as we understand that heads and haters will collectively provide feedback for changes, additions and improvements. Feel free to comment on what changes you would like to see or what elements are missing. We realize that in order for it to be validated it must be fairly universally accepted and likewise in order to be a viable product in the future it has to evolve with the times. The final row will therefore remain open for future elements yet to be determined.

Uptownkid and I have Copyright Protected (Sept 2008) our table to protect it from getting bitten, jacked, changed, sold, etc, so the rights belong to us. Within the next 2 weeks we will be selling T-shirts and posters through Ebay and various other online retailers yet to be determined but that will be announced later. (Spam element anyone?)

Before making this public, weeks ago, we put this through further quality control by submitting this to Eyegetzraw, DJ Ready Red, and Neb Dirty all who have contributed either with new elements or cosigned off on it that it is good.

So here is version 1.1, please give Uptownkid and I honest feedback about this document. Both positive and negative feedback is expected, we ain’t made of glass, but try not to be Element Ht.

my computer is too dumb to open the big size version, so I can't read the signification of the symbols.
So for the moment, I don't get it at all; I guess it'll make sense (hopefully) if I can read all the characters.

I want to see this become popular for you guys.
I'm going to go ahead and say i dont quite understand
how/why you are doing this, but sh*t.... make your paper
booboo.

My only issue is one im sure you've antagonized over...
and that is the vertical relationship of "elements" remaining
in fact....related.... which i'm not sure is even possible.

for example
,
IIA (the graffiti column) is GREAT...everything fits solidly...
same thing with IIIB...(although why Hilfiger is on there as
opposed to Puma or Rocawear or some sh*t I dont quite get)
but
VB, or IVA ? ... not so much really
sound system to parental advisory?
n-word to backpacker?

that all said, its represents an impressive endeavor
"I pity the foo' who dont drink his milk!"

I'm definitely impressed, really, I think that this is some very cool ish which shows what heads such as us are able to accomplish on company time (LOL). Gonna be gettin' one of those t-shirts, black, size XXL.

BTW, Checka, I left you a message this morning in reference to this, let's chop, peace.......

Edit: ok I got it, I finally read everything.
I was surprised, for exemple,I thought Bx would be bronx but it ain't, same thing for BK (brooklyn?) but it ain't.

This lacks of coherence sometimes as Isaac said, but the idea is definitively close to genius. There is something smart here, for sure.

Good work.

Will the T shirts be made by children in China? or will it be made of organic coton manufactured by US adults? Anyway, I really don't like the business/copyright aspect of this (very good) idea. This is not hip hop at all.

I really like it. Great idea. A few thoughts about how the elements are linked in the groups. If you want to be true to the Periodic Table, then Groups 1 and 2 should contain very similar elements (within each group) and get more reactive as you go down. I'm not sure how you translate "reactive" into hip-hop elements, maybe importance or impact? On the flip side, Group 7 should also contain elements that are very similar to each other, but with the most reactive at the top. Group 0's elements should also be very similar to each other, but all they do is get bigger as you go down. You don't need to worry so much about the other groups, so weaker associations could be used for the elements in those. The middle block of transition elements should all be vaguely similar, but it doesn't really matter where you put them within that block. I hope that wasn't too patronising if you already know all that stuff. Good luck with the project.
