Hip-Hop star Wyclef Jean will announce his bid for the President of Haiti, a source has confirmed with AllHipHop.com exclusively. Sources close to Wyclef confirmed with AllHipHop.com that the rapper will announce his bid for the country’s highest office next Thursday, on August 5th. The 37-year-old was born in Haiti, but immigrated to the United States at the age of 9-years-old, when he landed in Brooklyn, before settling in South Orange, New Jersey. As a member of The Fugees and as a solo artist, Wyclef has sold millions of records, in addition to collaborating with artists like Paul Simon, Gloria Estefen, Destiny’s Child, Carlos Santana and others. According to sources, the rapper will make his official announcement just two days prior to the country’s August 7th deadline to submit his plan for running for President. Analysts are predicting that Wyclef Jean will easily win the race with his financial connections, influence among the Haitian youth and his political connections around the world.

In an exclusive interview with AllHipHop.com, Wyclef's Presidential rival Michel Martelly also questioned the rapper's ability to help Haiti recover from a devastating earthquake in January, which killed 250,000 people and displaced another 1.5 million. Former Fugee group member Pras Michel is backing Martelly in his run against Wyclef Jean for President of Haiti. Martelly, who is also an award-winning Haitian musician, first became familiar with The Fugees after the release of their hit 1996 album The Score. According to Martelly, he has been a very close friendship with Wyclef and the rapper's family for years and his son even attended the Fugees reunion concert in 2006 in California.However, Martelly questioned Wyclef's ability to really lead the country. "I know that Clef is well intentioned. But, I believe that not having been raised here, not being familiar with any neighborhood – because I don’t think Clef can drive anywhere here on his own – he can’t speak the languages, I agree that those are handicaps, Martelly told AllHipHop.com in an exclusive interview. "I’m not saying that he couldn’t surprise the world and be a good president. I cannot say that; I would be speculating. I’d be speculating if I said he couldn’t deliver. But there are things about him that raise concerns for us here in Haiti."

Wyclef Jean In Hiding After Death Threats



(AP) PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - Hip hop artist Wyclef Jean said he was in hiding Tuesday after receiving death threats as he and more than 30 other potential candidates for Haiti's presidency waited to find out if they would be allowed to run in the November election.

The musician disclosed the threats in a series of e-mails to The Associated Press, revealing few details. Jean said he was told to get out of Haiti and that he was in hiding in a secret location in the Caribbean country.

The Haitian-born Jean said he did not know whether Haiti's electoral commission, known as the CEP, would approve his candidacy but that there had been questions about whether he met the residency requirements to run.

"We await the CEP decision but the laws of the Haitian Constitution must be respected," he said in one of a flurry of e-mails.

Haiti's Constitution requires candidates to have lived in the country for the five consecutive years before the election. Jean knew his U.S. upbringing could be a roadblock to his candidacy, but has said his appointment as a roving ambassador by President Rene Preval in 2007 exempts him from the residency requirement.

Lawyers for the musician were at the CEP headquarters seeking to argue his case, he said.

More than 30 people had filed to run for president of a country still struggling to recover from the Jan. 12 earthquake, which destroyed thousands of buildings and killed an estimated 300,000 people.

The CEP had been expected to publish the list of candidates earlier Tuesday but spokesman Richardson Dumel said the eligibility requirements of a number of candidates were still under review.

Haiti's president will preside over the spending of billions in foreign reconstruction aid in a country with a long history of political turmoil. Preval is not permitted to run for re-election.
