Help with historic (New York) spots in raps history...

Postby Flipmode » Mon Sep 27, 2010 1:01 pm

I'm in a map contest, to create a map of New York, with no limits whatsoever, except it must be of NY. Winning maps will be displayed in a SoHo gallery over Thanksgiving.

I'm 36 years old, and rap in the early 80's was my first true love. My first 2 cassettes were New Edition and the Fat Boys. Not exactly the very beginnings, but still old enough where only the true fans loved it.

So my idea was to create a map showcasing the birth of hip hop. This will be more of a piece of art, and not a map to drive by. So general accuracy is needed, but I can fudge if needed to
(you know, in the name of artistic freedom 8) )

So I know the story of Kool Herc at 1520 Sedgwick Ave - and the talent to come from the Queensbridge apartments - but I need some other landmark spots from the 5 burrows pictured.

Like I know RUN DMC are from Hollis, and LL Cool J is from Farmers Blvd - and how important Jamaica Queens is in the history.

But what else?

Here's some Artists and where they came from - but can anyone fill me in on some key spots to include in this map? I don't want to create it, then have it in a gallery, and be blatenly missing the obvious.

(by the way - i'm not a professional. I have a day job and art is a hobby of mine).

Brooklyn
Audio Two
Fat Boys
Beastie Boys
Whodini
UTFO
MC Lyte

Queens
LL Cool J
Run DMC
Roxanne Shante
Big Daddy Kane
Biz Markee

Harlem (Manhattan)
Kool Moe Dee
Doug E Fresh

Bronx
Rock Steady Crew
Slick Rick
Grandmaster Flash
BDP
Afrika Bambaataa

Staten Island
Anything happen here?

(Unsure)
Eric B? - somewhere on Long Island?
Public Enemy?

Also - the map is still in development. I'm about to start working on some bridges, wanted feedback from people who understand. Thanks.

First of all, New York City is all about Uptown and Downtown. In other words, uptown is north and downtown is south. The map you posted is sideways. Manhattan runs from north to south. Harlem is Uptown and the Village is downtown. If you turned the map you posted 90 degrees you'd be off to the right start.

In otherwords, when people say "Uptown" they mean the Bronx or Harlem (typically Harlem but technically The Bronx is uptown too). If you are in Manhattan and you say "I'm going Uptown" it means you are going North. if you say "i'm going downtown" it means you are going South.

You have South bronx on your map but looking at the map its not in the South part of the bronx, according to your map, Sedgewick Ave is in the West Bronx!!!

Thanks 5 Grand -

I only tilted the map because it seemed to fill the canvas better. I was going to put a compass on it showing true north, If you think that New Yorkers will look at this layout and laugh, then I better tilt it true north.

wow. that was exactly what I needed. I knew i came to the right spot. Give me a few days to sort through some of that, and I'll let you know what I come up with.

And you know I came across that Hush Tours during some google searches - and it looks sweet. I'm down in South Carolina now, but have family up in Jersey - I'm going to try and make it into the city over thanksgiving if this map makes it to the gallery. Maybe take the tours -

But anyway - thanks for JDL's link. I'll probably message him once I get a little more done, and see what he can add. I have until Oct 31 to finish - so i can't sit on it too much.

Thanks again troy - much appreciated.
and where the hell did you get 250 live tapes? You have any uploaded I can listen to?

got it - but it looks like you included most of the list ! Is there anyway you could narrow it down to like 20 or 25 ?

Like:

Enjoy Records
Wild Style Amphitheater (South Manhattan)
The Factory West / Randy's Place
The Twilight Zone
The Sparkle Club
The Executive Playhouse
Hevalo Club
371
Emma's Place / T-Connection...
Empire Skating Rink

Stuff like this - like landmark spots, It appears it's mostly concentrated in the Bronx, so I'll zoom in the map on that area. No need to include Queens / Brooklyn, even though there are historic sites there also.

As much as I appreciate the detail in your list, I just don't think for my map project I'll be able to include it all.

Places like Burger Kings, all the parks (18, 23, 116, 118....), and the some of the locations I just can't find anything on.

Maybe once this project is done, we can make a bigger and better one - with more detail - but I have to submit the finished map in a couple of weeks -

Also - I've been reading and reading about this history for the past few days, and find it fascinating. I also see that a lot of the landmarks mentioned have been torn down or rebuilt. Like reading about Bobby Robinson and Enjoy Records and how much of a landmark that place was, it should have been preserved somehow.

Anyway - thanks again for the attention you've given Troy.

Rob.

hey Troy, you forgot Edenwald...

Im buggin, IM BUGGIN, ive never even heard of Edenwald yo...Is it me or is there always some smart-mouth that comes along that has to 'correct' a brother on-line these days, aint no one correctin my mans Troy over here, I read that list on Foundation a fair while ago, it tore my hair-line back an inch at least

At first, the map from the Born in the Bronx book came to mind, but im guessin its waaaay too ambiguous for what yer after [Ah, 'the black door', the most mysterious building entry in Hip-Hop history ?]. Dope little map nonetheless

While lookin for that, I found this

http://mapping.cit.cornell.edu/hiphop/map/index.cfm

Interestin to find flyers alongside the locations.....nice concept

Stay frosty Flipmode, and good luck with the project

What's ging on Flipmode, welcome.
I haven't touched base with the fam here in awhile,
my apologies...but a brother still out here yall, trying to get his.
I just stopped by to say good concept,my brother.

My main man,Troy L.
How you be,my brother???
You know how I get down,
i'm like George Clooney out in dis' mutha.LOL.

Troy,I could have sworn we talked about some of these before,
but I see them vacated on your great list.....

THE EXECUTIVE PLAYHOUSE - Was off of the Cross Bronx Expressway,
Up on Mount Eden and Jerome.

CLUB 371 - Was further down off of Teller Avenue and Clay.

SPARKLE - My older brother tells me was off of 174th and Jerome.
But my older sister who hung tight during them days says that the Executive Playhouse
changed it's name to The Sparkle Club.Double check on that my brother, but
you know your boy is in the ballpark.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE - Was more of a spot than a club,
It was upstairs from a Latin club on Jerome after Tremont and before Burnside.
about 179th st.

THE PUZZLE - Was at 41 East 161st right near the train station.

NEW YORK SCHOOL OF PRINTING (GRAPHIC ARTS HIGH) -
Is across the street from Park West High. It's on 49th street itself
Between 9th and 10th.(439 W.49th St.)Spent a year there then got bounced to Stevenson.

Also for those who go way back,or who have siblings that go back further...
THE HEVALO was first called SOULSVILLE.

Also, not for nothing but these particular spots go way,way back
I don't even think Technics were rollin' yet, cats were rockin' them THORENS 1100's
back then.My older brother Rick wore his out at the crib.LOL.

Peace,My brothers

Another question..

still doing my research - i'm finding some contradicting facts. 2 Quotes from 2 different books place the Hevalo Club and the Twilight Zone Club in the same location: On Jerome, between Tremont and Burnside. Were these clubs the same place? Or maybe beside each other on the same block? I figured somebody here might know - you all seem to know your history.
